Key Changes to Cyber Essentials Requirements in 2025
Starting April 2025, several important updates will be made to the Cyber Essentials requirements. These changes are designed to enhance security and adapt to evolving technological landscapes. Here are the key updates:
- Passwordless Authentication: The new requirements will allow for passwordless authentication methods as a valid response to the multi-factor authentication (MFA) question for internet-facing services. This change acknowledges the growing adoption of secure, password-free login methods.
- Software Definition Update: The definition of software will now include all components of a multi-tiered solution. This ensures that all parts of the software stack are supported and up-to-date.
- Vulnerability Fixes: The definition of “fixes” has been expanded to include the testing of patches and monitoring their effects. This aims to ensure that patches are effective and do not introduce new issues.
- Home and Remote Working: The term “home working” has been updated to “home and remote working” to reflect the broader range of locations where employees may work, including cafes, hotels, and other shared spaces.
- Cyber Essentials Plus Test Specification: New verification steps have been added to the Cyber Essentials Plus Test Specification. These include inspecting the boundaries of the defined scope, verifying the segregation of sub-nets, and ensuring the correct calculation of sample sizes for testing.
These updates are part of ongoing efforts to keep the Cyber Essentials scheme relevant and effective in protecting organisations from common cyber threats. For more detailed information, please visit our website.

The Update Strikes Back!
A great disturbance in the Force has been detected…….devices that have been in deep hibernation (or tucked away in cupboards) won’t receive the latest upgrade to our remote monitoring and management software—the one marked by the love heart in your system tray. Without it, we can’t monitor or manage them, including deploying critical security updates. To restore balance, we need to have these devices connected to the internet between Monday 10th February (no sooner) and Friday 28th February (no later). Please power on these devices, ensure they are connected to the internet, and leave them on for a couple of hours so updates can run in the background.
If you encounter any Sith-level issues, raise a support ticket through the Lugo portal with a distress signal that your device needs updating. Help us keep the fleet secure and operational!
Thanks for reading – the force is strong with this one!
