LugoLocker and admin rights software installation.

Traditional Admin Accounts for Software Installation.
  • Permissions: Only users with administrative privileges can install software. This is a basic security measure to prevent unauthorised software installations.
  • Control: This method relies on user account control (UAC) to restrict software installation to admin accounts. Standard users must provide admin credentials to install software.
  • Flexibility: Admins have full control over what software gets installed, but this can be less flexible if multiple users need to install software frequently. Compromised admin accounts can be used to install unauthorised software or malware.
LugoLocker: Zero Trust, enhanced security application controls.
  • Application Allowlisting: LugoLocker uses a default deny approach, where only approved applications can run. This prevents unauthorised software from executing.
  • Granular Control: Administrators can create detailed policies to control which applications and files users can run, based on file attributes such as the path, publisher etc.
  • Security: LugoLocker enhances security by preventing unauthorised applications from running, even if a user has admin rights. It also provides visibility into application behaviour before allowing execution. This is crucial in the event of software being downloaded for example without the users knowledge from an infected source such as email or a compromised website.
  • Approval Centre: LugoLocker includes an Approval Centre where admins can review and approve or deny software requests, adding an extra layer of control.

In summary: Restricting software installation to admin accounts provides a basic level of control. LugoLocker offers a more comprehensive and flexible approach to managing application controls, denying malware install/execution, and therefore enhancing security.

Zero Trust is a cybersecurity concept that’s been around for some time. It’s simple: don’t trust anything by default and only allow what’s necessary with the least privilege possible. This applies to all enterprise assets, from data and devices to applications, endpoints, and infrastructure. It’s like an exclusive club – if you’re not on the list, you’re not getting in.
